Submissions Guidelines
Pop Occulture Magazine is currently seeking articles on the strange and hidden aspects of pop culture. We use pop culture and current events as a jumping off point for exploration into the realms of the bizarre and esoteric. All submissions must be well-written and tightly focused, using excellent grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling.
Reviews
We are interested in media reviews both past and present, of a length between 500 and 1,000 words, which pull in some kind of “hidden” aspect of the media being reviewed, or examine subtexts or unusual correlations found within the work. Show your readers not only why the media being reviewed is important, but also let us know whether it is worth our time and/or money.
Articles
Articles are somewhat longer explorations of the weird parts of pop culture which seek to both enlighten and entertain (see site sections for suggested subject areas). All articles must have strong pop culture references to help ground discussions and to give readers of all knowledge levels, religious and philosophical backgrounds a common starting place.
Be engaging and original enough to keep experts entertained, but also accessible enough so that newbies won’t be left scratching their heads. Please also provide links or resources for further study. Suggested length for articles is between 1,000 and 2,000 words. We will consider publishing somewhat (but not too much) longer articles than that, provided they really knock our socks off.
Rule of thumb: if you find yourself wandering around a lot in your article or not making a solid point, consider breaking it up into several smaller articles and attacking your subjects separately. We are not interested in long rambling pieces of writing.
Features
Features are nothing short of our best articles. They follow all the same guidelines as regular articles, but they are so exciting and well-written that we think everybody ought to read them. Features are advertised prominently on every page of the site, drawing lots of traffic, attention and discussion because of their high profile and awesome content. The editors of this site will select which articles will be given featured status.
Submissions Procedure
Email us a short pitch (100-200 words) describing the subject of your article or review and your approach to it. Keep it as informal as you want. We will get back to you with further instructions. Ultimately, we will ask that your final submission (not your pitch) will be in Word document format with links embedded in it. This will help us cut down on the time it takes to sift and re-format articles out of the sometimes finicky email format. We reserve the right to judiciously edit accepted submissions at our own discretion for clarity and length. If a more substantial edit is required, we will return the piece to you with suggestions and you’re free to re-submit.
Note: We are especially interested in new and original articles, but will also consider publishing high-quality articles which have been posted on other websites and which meet our existing editorial guidelines.
Author Agreement
By submitting an article or media review to Pop Occulture Magazine, you agree to grant us non-exclusive rights to publish your work electronically on our website. “Non-exclusive rights” means that you keep ownership of the copyright and are free to publish it elsewhere (in addition to here) as you see fit.
We currently can not pay contributors, but you will receive credit for your work, along with a link to your website (if you have one), and you will be able share in a large well-developed audience and creative community.
